Summary

The purpose of this page is to capture my experience using Wiki tools. I am trying to determine which is the best wiki tool to allow an R&D team collaborate during the inception and prototyping phase of a software development project

JSP Wiki

It was very easy to install but the editing and navigation capabilities where not really great so after about an hour of usage. I decided that it was not really a good fit for what we are trying to do.

JotSpot

It has the advantage of being hosted and has some nice modules (ex: a very flexible spreadsheet and great email integration - which is key for capturing conversational wiki). The cons is that it is not flexible enough and does not really allow easy refactoring/restructure of information. It seems to be focusing more on light-weight applications development than knowledge management.

xwiki

Easy to install and configure (despite the fact that it is extremely flexible and requires a backend database). Comes with a lot of features (PDF, forms, etc...). There is room for improvement on the UI side. Like Jot, it seems to be focusing on light-weight application and not really knowledge and document management. The positive side is that it is open enough to allow development of new modules that could fill those gaps.

(to be continued)

I am continuing to look. If you have suggestions, please drop a comment. Thank you.

It will make sense to include a section on MediaWiki as well. It's powering Wikipedia after all !!

MediaWiki is the most widely used wiki, and has lots of extensions.

I also love Wikka Wiki for personal use.
